YOUTH POWER FOR A BETTER FUTURE IN BOSNIA

“Youth power for a better future in Bosnia” is a training program about benefits and significance of exchange and volunteering programs in overcoming cultural differences.

This project is a result of the first “HARMONY Project: Train the Trainer” program, implemented in B&H in 2021.

We believe that positive changes in society are only possible if we first make positive changes within ourselves. By delivering our “Train the trainer” program across the region, both the philosophy and implementation of our mission will spread to communities who need it most.

About the project

This was a 3-days training program, during which 20 young people and education sector representatives had a several workshops with 5 professional coaches.

They spoke about the benefits and importance of international exchange and volunteering experiences and non-formal education in overcoming cultural differences, prejudices and contributing to the development of local communities. They also presented the positive stories and the experiences of previous volunteers, including the opportunities in local and international partner organizations that host young people.

Participants also learned about identities, cultures, human connections and performed peer-to-peer sharing of experiences and skills in writing application documents for the programs. The workshops were hosted and supported by “Youth Association Firefly” in Brcko.

The implementation of this project was supported by the Rotary International (Global Grant), Rotary Club Aarau, Rotary District 1980 and NGO SANCHILD.

HOW IS THE LOCAL HARMONY PROJECT CREATED?

HARMONY Project is a platform for education of professionals, designed with the focus on individual well-being, interpersonal connections, and trust-building.

One HARMONY Project starts as the “Train the Trainer” program, where participants (trainees) undergo 7 training modules carefully designed by the international coaches, and results in the Local HARMONY Projects. Each project is designed by one trainee and addresses one issue or an important topic in their local communities, and is implemented by employing their unique skill set, SANCHILD’s values and the HARMONY Project mission to inspire positive changes. Finally, the projects may continue to be improved and implemented in the future, to create “long-lasting ripple effects that positively transform societies”.

About HARMONY Trainee

MILOS POPIC

“One of the leading causes of hate speech are poverty and unemployment, where even educated people may fall under the political pressures and contribute to further ethnic divisions in B&H. However, traveling and volunteering abroad helps young people to adapt to new communities, discover new cultures and open their mind to diversity, and helps them transform the way they see themselves and the world.”

Milos Popic is the Project Officer and Voluntary Service Coordinator at the “Youth organization Firefly” in Bosnia. His primary responsibilities are coordinating youth and exchange projects, and mentoring, designing, planning and deploying seminars. He is also responsible for coaching youth to overcome the obstacles that might occur during their volunteering experience. He applies multiple techniques and methods of the non-formal education system with excellent results. He is one of the coordinators for the network “Promote Positive”, supported by the mission OSCE in B&H, that fights against all shapes of hate speech in Brcko District.
